Lilac Mythology

This hardy, sweet bloom has long been cultivated in northern climates of Europe and Asia, but its Latin name, Syringa vulgaris, hints to ancient Greece. In Greek mythology, Pan, god of the forests, was enamored with a nymph named Syringa. The nymph was frightened of the god as he chased her through the trees and transformed into the fragrant flower. An early-blooming flower, lilacs are associated with spring renewal and symbolize youthful innocence, purity and pride.
