Pear Mythology
The pear is one of the world’s most ancient foods. Stretching back to antiquity, dried pear slices were found in ancient cave dwellings in Switzerland and have been cultivated in Asia for about 3,000 years. In fact, pears appear in Chinese writings beginning at least 1,200 years ago. In China, the pear is a symbol of immortality because the trees survive for such a long time. In Europe, the pear was first mentioned in literature in Homer’s “The Odyssey” as one of the gifts of the gods.
