Amaretto Mythology
This sweet almond-flavored Italian liqueur was created by a Saronno widow in 1525 as a gift for Renaissance artist Bernardino Luini, one of Leonardo Da Vinci’s students. Luini had been commissioned to paint a fresco of the Madonna of the Miracles, and for his model, he chose a young, widowed innkeeper. The woman fell in love with the artist, and concocted this amber potion of steeped apricot kernels, which she presented him as a gift.
