Coconut Mythology

Although found mostly in the tropics, the coconut is known throughout the world for its versatility and health benefits. In India it is known as the tree of life . Some old creation myths even say that the first woman sprouted from the blossom of a coconut tree. It has long been a fertility symbol and in Bali women are forbidden to touch the coconut tree for fear of stealing its fertility. On some Pacific Islands discs were carved from the hard shell of the coconut and used as currency. From the culinary to the perfumery arts, coconuts can be found in almost every aspect of our daily lives.
